Slot RTP and Volatility Explained

Updated

Every slot in the Trixino lobby comes with two numbers that tell you far more about how it will feel to play than the theme or the soundtrack: RTP and volatility. Neither predicts what happens in your next session, but together they explain why some games drip-feed small wins and others go quiet for a long stretch before something big lands. Here is what each one means, illustrated with titles you will find in the lobby.

RTP: the long-run average, not a promise

Return to player is the percentage of all money staked on a game that the game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. A slot with a 96% RTP is designed to return £96 for every £100 wagered across millions of spins and many players. It says nothing about what you personally will get back in an evening. Short sessions swing wildly in both directions; the RTP only shows through over a volume of play no individual comes close to.

The UK Gambling Commission describes RTP in the same terms: a theoretical, long-term figure, and it expects licensed operators to make game information like this available to players. Whatever the casino, the principle is the same, which is why it is worth knowing where to look.

Why the same slot can have different RTPs

Many studios supply each game in several versions with different return settings, and the operator chooses which one to run. So the RTP you read on a review site or a studio fact sheet is not necessarily the one configured in the lobby you are playing. We do not list RTP figures for Trixino's games for exactly this reason: the only figure that counts is the one shown inside the game itself.

How to check the RTP in the game

  1. Open the slot from the Trixino slots lobby.
  2. Tap the menu, "i" or paytable icon, usually in a corner of the game screen.
  3. Scroll through the rules or game information pages. The RTP is normally stated near the end, sometimes with a separate figure for bonus buy features.
  4. If you cannot find it, ask customer support which version is running.

Volatility: how the wins are distributed

Volatility (sometimes called variance) describes the shape of the payouts. Two games with identical RTPs can feel completely different:

  • Low volatility: frequent small wins, fewer long dry spells, a gentle balance curve. Good for longer sessions on a fixed budget.
  • Medium volatility: a mix of regular small hits and occasional larger features.
  • High volatility: long stretches with little return, punctuated by rare, much bigger wins, often tied to a bonus feature. Your balance can drop quickly.

Studios usually describe volatility on a scale in the game information, or with a rating such as lightning bolts. Like RTP, it is worth checking in game rather than relying on memory.

The table below gives a general feel for some of the slots featured in the lobby. Volatility descriptions reflect how these games are widely described by players and the industry; confirm the details, and the RTP, in each game's information screen.

Putting the two numbers to work

RTP and volatility are most useful when you match them to your budget and the kind of session you want:

  • Small budget, longer session: lean towards lower-volatility games such as Cleopatra or Burning Desire and smaller stakes, so the balance lasts.
  • Chasing a feature: high-volatility titles such as Book of Dead or Assassin Moon can pay big from free spins, but plan for long quiet stretches and set a stop point before you start.
  • Playing through a bonus: check the welcome terms first. Some games may be excluded or weighted differently, and there will be a maximum stake. Our guide on how multi-deposit welcome packages work explains why.

Two myths worth dropping

"It hasn't paid for ages, so it's due"

Each spin is independent and decided by a random number generator. A slot that has gone quiet is no more likely to pay on the next spin than one that has just paid out. Volatility explains why dry spells happen; it does not mean a win is owed.

"Higher RTP means I'll win"

A higher RTP improves the long-run average slightly. Over a single session, volatility and plain chance matter far more. The house edge is still there; RTP just tells you its size.

Whatever you play, the most reliable way to protect a session is a limit you set before you start. Our guide to deposit limits and reality checks shows how, and the responsible gambling page lists free support if play stops being fun.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see a slot's RTP at Trixino?
Open the game and look in its information or paytable screen, usually behind a menu or 'i' icon. The RTP shown there is the version configured in the lobby, which is the one that applies to your play.
Is Book of Dead high volatility?
It is widely regarded as a high-volatility slot, with its bigger wins concentrated in the free spins feature. Check the game information screen for the studio's own rating.
Does a higher RTP mean I will win more in a session?
Not reliably. RTP is a long-run average over millions of spins. In a single session, volatility and chance have a much bigger effect on the result.
